Information for Farmers and Landowners

County Durham Metal Detectorists is a professionally run organisation offering a first class service to all our landowners and farmers. We are non-profit and raise money for landowners and local charities as well as giving our members a chance to enjoy their hobby.

What We Do

Once you have contacted us we will arrange to visit you and explain what we do in more detail. If you are happy with everything and you agree to allow us to hold an event on your land we will provide you with a written agreement. We will bring a site map with us and ask you to identify the areas that can be detected and the areas that are out of bounds.

We will always give you prior notice on when we would like to visit your land and we will arrange it at a convenient time for you and in accordance to the land you have available.

On the Event Day

We arrive around 8am to set up a small pop-up tent and to ensure cars are parked in the designated area agreed with you in advance.

On the event day our organisers will look after the entire event so you will be undisturbed and able to carry on with your day as normal. We may need to meet you beforehand to receive keys to gates which we would arrange with you prior to the event.

Our marshals monitor the members to ensure they are following the strict group code of practice and regulations. This includes back filling any holes  as well as reporting significant finds.

Following the Event

After the event has finished for the day we will pay you your fee (agreed in advance) from the monies received on the day. We will show you photographs of the finds and describe what they are.

If anything found on your land is declared treasure under the Treasure Act 1996 you and the finder will receive 50% each of the total value of the find/s. This will go through the Finds Liaison Officer for the local area and they will contact us if they believe any of the artefacts found to be under the Treasure Act.
